Go ‘Settings > General > Home > Spotlight Search‘ and disable as much as you can. Your phone will be more responsive afterwards and you won’t lose the 4.x functionality you have come to rely on

Here is a quick guide on how to complete this task:

BEFORE CONTINUING! – If you want your contacts and all other data to be restored after this process has been completed you NEED to have a restore point in iTunes that was created before you upgraded to 4.0. If you don’t your basically screwed and have to start over again. Unless your like me and have your contacts synced with a macbook or mobile me.

1. Locate the firmware you want to downgrade too. On MACOSX it can be found in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates on Windows you should be able to find it in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates.

If you do not have the firmware backed up you can download it from the complete repository located here.

2. Next you want to download recboot which is a very handy app that will get around the restrictions that Apple introduced in iPhone OS 4 regarding DFU state.

3. Now you want to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Connect the iphone to the machine you are performing the downgrade from. Hold the Home and Lock button for 10 seconds, then release the lock button and continue to hold the home button. After a short time iTunes should tell you that it has discovered a iPhone in recovery mode. If you don’t see this, repeat the above step until you do.

4. Time to downgrade. Acknowledge the iTunes message and then shift + click the restore button (option + click on MACOSX) and select the firmware that you would like to downgrade too. Your iPhone will now start to recover and install the new firmware.

5. After the firmware has been installed (takes 5 – 10 minutes) your iPhone should now show the usb cable to iTunes logo and iTunes should show a error saying it could not restore your iPhone. Now open the recboot application you downloaded earlier and select ‘exit recovery mode’, after a few seconds you should be booted into your new firmware and have a working phone.
