If you don’t fancy the downgrade option I posted about yesterday, because you either are paranoid about bricking your phone or have become to reliant on the features that came in the latest OS release then you can squeeze a little more out of your 3G running Os 4.x by doing the following:
Go ‘Settings > General > Home > Spotlight Search‘ and disable as much as you can. Your phone will be more responsive afterwards and you won’t lose the 4.x functionality you have come to rely on
So, even though I plan on ditching this iPhone 3G in the very near future. I still wanted to downgrade it from 4.1 to 3.1.3.
Here is a quick guide on how to complete this task:
BEFORE CONTINUING! – If you want your contacts and all other data to be restored after this process has been completed you NEED to have a restore point in iTunes that was created before you upgraded to 4.0. If you don’t your basically screwed and have to start over again. Unless your like me and have your contacts synced with a macbook or mobile me.
1. Locate the firmware you want to downgrade too. On MACOSX it can be found in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates on Windows you should be able to find it in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates.
If you do not have the firmware backed up you can download it from the complete repository located here.
2. Next you want to download recboot which is a very handy app that will get around the restrictions that Apple introduced in iPhone OS 4 regarding DFU state.
3. Now you want to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Connect the iphone to the machine you are performing the downgrade from. Hold the Home and Lock button for 10 seconds, then release the lock button and continue to hold the home button. After a short time iTunes should tell you that it has discovered a iPhone in recovery mode. If you don’t see this, repeat the above step until you do.
4. Time to downgrade. Acknowledge the iTunes message and then shift + click the restore button (option + click on MACOSX) and select the firmware that you would like to downgrade too. Your iPhone will now start to recover and install the new firmware.
5. After the firmware has been installed (takes 5 – 10 minutes) your iPhone should now show the usb cable to iTunes logo and iTunes should show a error saying it could not restore your iPhone. Now open the recboot application you downloaded earlier and select ‘exit recovery mode’, after a few seconds you should be booted into your new firmware and have a working phone.
Hope this helps someone
On the weekend I intend to switch from iPhone to a HTC desire running Android 2.1 and hopefully 2.2 very soon. Although I have played with the Desire in Telstra shops around the place and have been very impressed.. it’s just not the same trialing one in a store with the sales rep breathing down your neck telling you to “check this out!” when I have absolutely no interest in the fact that it has a motion backdrop….
So I wanted to some space to play with the operating system.. some space by myself. Thankfully you can emulate the phone operating system on your PC. Lifehacker has a setup tutorial, if your tempted by switching to Google’s phone system that is taking on the world if telephonic technology then follow this jump and install the emulator.
I have been having some problems with wireless in my house, packet loss and dropped connections. I still have not been able to resolve the issue entirely and can only put it down to some kind if interference inside the house, possibly in relation to the steal frame the structure is erected around.
However, I did find a useful web based app to detect wireless access points in your area and advises the channel it is operating on, its security algorithm, speeds, models, mac addresses and a bunch of other information that my help your wireless diagnostic tests.

No setup required, just click the link and wait for it to load. Of course, you will need a wireless card on whichever host you are running this on.
Apple have officially announced the iPhone 4 and specifications on their website.
Details can be found here. It certainly looks like an improvement on my existing 3G iPhone, I think I’ll just skip the 3GS and go straight to the 4 on release.
